The wild Yukon awaits – hear it calling. On this active adventure tour we set out to hike the most rewarding trails of the Southern Lakes and Kluane National Park, rafting the spectacular Tatshenshini River.

On our first hiking tour on scenic trails we will be overlooking the grand Southern Lakes. The following days we will spend exploring hiking trails in Kluane National Park and Reserve which may be Canada’s best kept secret when it comes to spectacular natural wonders.

Kluane is part of the Kluane / Wrangell-St. Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek UNESCO World Heritage Site, which falls in both Canada and the United States. The area is the largest non-polar icefield and is home to some of the longest and most spectacular glaciers in the world. Kluane has 25+ hiking trails with terrain ranging from moraine to rugged mountains to glaciers to alpine plateau, at various levels of difficulty.

Over 2,000 glaciers—some a kilometer thick—call the area home. About 4 percent of them surge; that means water forms between rock and ice, enabling the glacier to move more than a mile in a month. Canada’s highest mountain, Mount Logan (19,551 feet), is located in the middle of the park. In fact, very little of the park is accessible by road. To really experience Kluane National Park, you need to hike. The Tatshenshini River runs through beautiful landscape  on the outskirts of Kluane National Park giving us a fun-packed rafting day.

Arrival Whitehorse

From the airport we drive you to your hotel located in the centre of Whitehorse. Whitehorse is small and easy to explore on foot. You will meet your fellow travellers and your guide will review the itinerary at our group meeting this afternoon. The evening is free to explore the city and do any last minute shopping. Carcross & Southern Lakes

Starting in Whitehorse, we stop first at the beautiful ‘Miles Canyon’ with it’s famous suspension bridge and continue on to the South Klondike Highway where the mountains rise as we approach Carcross and the Southern Lakes region – which is well know as the photographer’s paradies. We visit the smallest desert in the world - the Carcross desert - and we visit Carcross, a charming lakeshore village teeming with First Nations and gold-rush history. On a beginner-level hiking tour on scenic trails we will be overlooking the grand Southern Lakes. This region is nowadays the final stop for the White Pass Railway. Of course we will also admire Emerald Lake, called „Rainbow Lake” from the locals due to its sensational coloration.. Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse

Haines Junction & Kluane National Park

Today, we head out to Kluane National Park and start our visit at the DaKu Visitor Information Centre for interpretive displays and an audio-visual presentation. One of the hidden gems of Kluane National Park, the Spruce Beetle Trail offers an interpretive hike with a rewarding sight of Kluane’s Glarciers. Depending on the level of interest among the passengers we can also organize a spectacular flight by bush plane over the immense glaciers of the park (optional). This adventure, over a virtually pristine wilderness, is especially spectacular during a clear day. Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction

Hiking in Kluane National Park

Towering over Kathleen Lake, King’s Throne is one of the parks iconic mountains reaching an impressive 1,990 meter above sea level. In the beginning the trail follows an old mining road along the south side of Kathleen Lake. At the base of the mountain, the trail begins to climb through a forested area. Reaching the ‘saddle’ gives the first rewarding views overlooking Kathleen Lake and the open foothills at the edge of Kluane National Park. The trail continues along the ridge of the saddle to reach the peak with a breathtaking view into the park. Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction

Hiking in Kluane National Park

The area surounding Kluane Lake is known for it’s stunning vista and gives an encouraging setting for a full day hike along Sheep Creek. The trail follows the Slim River Valley before leading up to Sheep Mountain from where we enjoy views into the Slim River Valley ending at the foot of Kaskawulsh Glacier. Alongside Sheep Mountain we might spot herds of Dall Sheep roaming the area. Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction

Rafting the Upper Tatshenshini River

We will continue on the Haines Road towards Tatshenshini Alsek Provincial Park. Once we reach the Tatshenshini River we will start a adventures day rafting the breathtaking canyons at the foot of Kluane National Park. The Tatshenshini is perfect for the whole family. This exciting class III/IV river runs through beautiful landscapes. Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction

  • I flew to Whitehorse only for 1 night in the hope to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). It was a risk as they don't come out every night, but it paid off. At approx 3am the lights came out and it was spectacular.
