Join us for the photography safari of a lifetime through the vast coniferous boreal forest, rugged mountains, and a network of rivers, lakes and coast line of southern Yukon and Alaska. We will start in Whitehorse, travelling along the southern reaches of Yukon and into Alaska. Get ready for photographing mountain landscapes, from-twilight-to-zenith colors, and roaming wildlife.

We will focus on planning for unique landscapes, mountain ranges and wildlife photographs. Learning how to use proper composition and natural objects to help create impactful “keeper” photos. Techniques such as long exposures, HDR and light painting will all be part of our daily activities.  When we are out photographing we will discuss camera settings, holding your camera properly, how to set up a tripod in different terrain, how to care for your gear and what it means to think outside of the box. Our goal is to take your photography to the next level and help you achieve your photography goals.

We will visit the magnificent Kluane National Park, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. We will stop at Sheep Mountain in hopes to spot the local Dall Sheeps on their traditional territory. Several waterfalls and stunning landscape photography opportunities exist on this trip as well. We will also have the opportunity to photograph a variety of sea birds including Bald Eagles, Wildlife is everywhere on this journey – and not just marine wildlife. We regularly see Bears and Mountains Goats high on the mountain cliffs. When we return to the hotel each night, we will then open up our laptops and discuss editing techniques to achieve sharper images, how to manipulate color, create better composition from cropping and introduce you to some techniques we use to create more appealing images.

Arrival Whitehorse

From the airport we drive you to your hotel located in the centre of Whitehorse. Whitehorse is small and easy to explore on foot. Visit the SS Klondike National Historic Site; among the last of the great paddle wheelers that plied the Yukon River system until the 1950’s, the Old Log Church; the oldest building in Whitehorse, the unique Log Cabin Skyscraper; a three story tower made completely out of logs. And when you’ve seen all these top sites, Main Street is perfect for strolling and shopping with its shops galleries and café’s. One of the most sought-after Northern experiences, a Yukon vacation is only complete with viewing the Midnight Sun or the Aurora Borealis cascading across the Yukon night sky (depending on the season). Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse Photography Highlights: S.S. Klondike National Historic Site.

Whitehorse – Haines Junction

Today we will be journeying to Haines Junction, it is a gateway to the spectacular Kluane National Park and Reserve. Surrounded by a vast beautiful and rugged landscape, Haines Junction is truly a wilderness town and offers exceptional outdoor experiences. Today we will experience a breathtaking Glacier Air Tour, a once and a lifetime flight. We will see Canada’s highest mountain, Mount Logan and the world’s largest non-polar icefields. This is the best way to see Kluane National Park, where there is a good chance of seeing a grizzly bear, black bear, moose, dall sheep or mountain goats. Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction Photography Highlights: Otterfalls Bridge, Sheep Mountain, Glacier Sightseeing Flight.

Haines Junction – Haines

Today we are getting up early, it’s off to see some of the best areas for mirror lake reflections with snow peaked mountains to complete our images. On our way, we will be driving through some low-lying marsh areas. In the past, they have been great for moose images, surreal fog images of low pines and mountain backdrops. Before we leave this area, we will introduce you to some amazing landscapes, that change as we drive south into BC. Here you will see tundra, barren lands, small trees and rocky mountains. But all it takes is one hill and you are back into boreal forest with snow peaked mountains. This area has been quite successful in past trips for spotting wildlife such as moose, black bear with cubs, northern hawk owls, grizzly bear and coyotes. Overnight accommodation in Haines Photography Highlights: Tatshenshini Alsek Provincial Park, Three Gardner Mountains, Haines Pass, Bold Eagle Preserve.

Haines

Haines Alaska offers great opportunities for bear and bald eagle viewing and photography along the Chilkoot River. With or without a camera, this tour will take you into the Alaska you have always dreamed of. Glaciers, wildflowers, wildlife and salmon streams are just around the corner away from town. Haines is without a doubt worthy of being your destination in Alaska. No matter the season, opportunities abound for recreation and exploration, especially with a camera in hand. From wildflowers to wildlife, hanging glaciers to glacier fed lakes, salmon running the rivers, sunshine or rain, Haines has never failed to meet and exceed our guest’s desires and dreams, be they hikers, fishers, photographers or sightseers. Overnight accommodation in Haines Photography Highlights: Moose Meadows, Rainbow Glacier, Fort Haines, Historic Buildings in Haines.

Haines – Skagway

Haines is a picturesque fishing village situated on a finger of land between Chilkat and Chilkoot inlets in the Lynn Canal. Grizzly bears feed on the pink salmon that run in one of Alaska’s most pristine salmon rivers. Of course there are eagle opportunities as well, as salmon provide the base of a time honored fundamental food chain. In the afternoon, via ferry we travel through the Lynn Fjord to the historic stampeders town, Skagway. Overnight accommodation in Skagway Photography Highlights: Chilkat River, Lynn Fjord, Historic Buildings Skagway.

Skagway – Whitehorse

Today we will be heading to the Southern Lakes region, up the South Klondike Highway, between Skagway and Whitehorse. Travelling to Fraser, BC, we will ride the world famous narrow gauge White Pass railway over the White Pass Summit. We will be stopping at a small town, called Carcross. Home of the World’s Smallest Desert, and the great beach of Lake Bennett. The wonderous Emerald Lake dazzles us with beautiful colors which invite for another photography session. Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse Photography Highlights: White Pass & Yukon Route, Tushi Lake, Bennet Lake, Carcross, Carcoss Desert, Emerald Lake.
