Hosted by Yukon-Olympic Cross Country Skier, Jane Vincent, (Albertville, 1992) , our new cross country skiing tour offers a variety of cross country skiing experiences providing participants with a taste of the spectacular Yukon landscape in winter and the most fun you can have on two skiis!

Perhaps surprisingly, Canada’s Yukon boasts one of the country’s most avid cross country ski communities. Yukoners are passionate cross-country skiers and have developed several extensive community trail systems, each with a special character. Championship organizers at the highest levels have recognized the Yukon’s excellence and have awarded World Cup events in both cross country and biathlon, as well as the 2007 Canada Winter Games and 2010 Haywood Ski National Championships. These events have resulted in the development of several Olympic and National team cross country skiers and have attracted the attention of world class skiers, including your tour host, Jane Vincent.

Our tour is based in Whitehorse and communities a short distance outside the Yukon capital. The world class trail system of the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club at Mt. McIntyre is located just minutes from your downtown hotel. The trails are expertly groomed and offer many viewpoints of the beautiful surrounding mountains and valleys. Trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, to touring and racing.

Once you’ve got a feel for local conditions, we’ll travel just outside Whitehorse for a pleasant ski through the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and views of caribou, moose, elk, bison, musk-ox, mountain goats, Dall sheep, and even a lynx! An other day, we’ll travel to the stunning coastal ranges south of Whitehorse to ski the superb subalpine country in the White Pass.

After several days of fabulous skiing in the Whitehorse area, we will leave the groomed trails behind and head into the wild! An hour’s drive west of Whitehorse on the famous Alaska Highway brings us to a river confluence where we will begin skiing. Following the tracks of wild animals we will ski tour up the frozen Takhini River to a wilderness wall tent camp. You will experience first hand how frozen waterways provide routes of travel through the North.

Later we will continue west to Haines Junction, a village on the edge of a magnificent mountain range which contains Canada’s highest peak (Mt. Logan, 5920m) for 2 days of skiing in magnificent Kluane National Park; one of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness regions and home to world’s largest (non-polar) ice cap.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse
Transfer from Whitehorse Airport to your downtown hotel via city highlights including the SS Klondike, Old Log Church, and Log Cabin Skyscraper. At your group meeting this afternoon, you’ll meet your fellow tour participants and your guide will review the itinerary. Time for optional tours, shopping and sightseeing this evening. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse.
Day 2: Whitehorse
Whitehorse, you realize just how close Whitehorse is to the Yukon wilderness. Surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Yukon River Valley, the trails take us through a forest of spruce trees dusted by snow. After a good day of skiing, you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse.
Day 3: Whitehorse
This morning we’ll travel about 30 minutes outside town to the Takhini River valley. The area around Whitehorse has been a crossroads of culture and a meeting place for trading for a millennia. The valley has been continuously inhabited by the local Ta-an First Nations people for many generations. The lush valley provided an ample food supply and abundant shelter and Tlingit traders from the coast near Skagway and Haines would travel to the region during summer to trade coastal goods for those provided inland. Traditionally, First Nations people also visited the area hotsprings, recognizing their therapeutic value. We’ll ski the trails of the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, stopping at several well-situated overlooks for views of several of the Yukon’s large mammal species. Before returning to Whitehorse, we will have time for a relaxing soak in the +40C Takhini Hotsprings, warming tired muscles, just like the First Nations people of old. Day 4: Whitehorse
Today will be a memorable ski. We’ll travel the scenic Klondike Highway through the Southern Lakes region for a day of skiing in the spectacular White Pass. As we leave Whitehorse, the sharply peaked coastal mountains begin to come into view. We’ll pass Emerald Lake, which offers a nice photo, even if frozen in winter. Then we’ll continue on towards the Carcross Desert, known locally as the world’s smallest (it is in fact, an old lake bed), before arriving in historic Carcross. Christened “Caribou Crossing” by the 1898 gold rushers, the town’s name was later shortened. Prior to the Gold Rush, Southern Tutchone First Nations people would gather at the narrow spot between the 2 lakes, to hunt caribou at key times of the year. So abundant was the wildlife here that, according to legend, Mother Earth gave birth to all life on a hammock stretched between the 4 peaks that dominate the village. There is certainly something special about the surrounding landscapes; the Dalai Lama was even compelled to travel to Carcross in the 1950’s, and on arrival he proclaimed it one of the 7 holiest places on earth. Just past Carcross the road begins to climb as it passes along the shoreline of several large lakes and we soon we enter Northern British Columbia. At Log Cabin, near the top of the famous Chilkoot Trail (for years this was the location of Canada Customs), we’ll strap on the skis and hit the trail. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse.
Day 5: Whitehorse
Today we’ll travel out to the Takhini River Valley once again and ski along the frozen ice of the river to Jane’s “wall-tent” (a canvass tent stretched over a wooden frame) for a warm lunch and a chance to experience a typical Yukon winter wilderness camp. Returning on skis to the highway, we’ll board our tour vehicle and travel about an hour along the famous Alaska Highway, to Haines Junction, gateway to one of Canada’s greatest National Parks, Kluane! We’ll have dinner at the hotel and enjoy some small town life – Haines Junction is home to just 400 people – getting ready for 2 great days of skiing in this fantastic wilderness region. Overnight in a hotel in Haines Junction.
Day 6: Haines Junction
At more than 22,000 square kilometres, Kluane National Park is roughly the size of Switzerland. It protects a vast and wild landscape (no towns or roads) that is now UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the world’s largest internationally protected region in the world! The St. Elias Mountain range contained by the park contains most of Canada’s highest peaks, including Mt. Logan, Canada’s tallest at 5920m, as well as the world’s largest (non-polar) ice cap. We’ll ski two well-loved trails on the perimeter of the national park. The Auriol Trail loop is a wonderful 16km trail that offers some great overviews of the Dezdeash River Valley and Haines Junction below. The following day, we’ll travel west of town and ski the Alsek River Trail. An old mining road, the trail travels far into the Kluane backcountry along the Alsek River valley. As we venture further into the National Park, the trails offer glimpses of the icefields that crowns the spectacular St. Elias Mountains.
Day 7: Haines Junction
Jagged peaks, fringed with glaciers, lush valleys of pine and spruce, an area rich in both Native and Gold Rush history; this is the North you imagined when you booked your tour! Return to Whitehorse following the Alsek River trail ski. This evening, you’ll enjoy a last dinner together, reminiscing about the adventures of the past several days. Day 8: Departure Whitehorse
Timer permitting, you’ll be able to enjoy some last minute souvenir shopping on Main Street, or a last visit to one of the local museums before the transfer to the Whitehorse Airport. Tour services end on arrival at the airport.
